Thinking About the Akawa Butte Fire
Thinking About the Akawa Butte Fire
The rain here is tentative
as desire, little taps
on the pergola roof.
It’s plenty hot after sundown,
but relief is a notion
drifting in from the west.
On Akawa Butte the fire grew
several hundred acres today,
jumped the Wilt Road.
A pyrocumulus cloud formed
of its own mysterious accord.
The Incident Commander is
bullish: “We’ve been handed a gift.”
The fire crews are bearing down
as best they can. We send prayers
for rain and staunch wills, of thanks.
I ponder how to mail
a chilled watermelon to the front.
